# Set up a new wallet

The Blockstream app (formerly Blockstream Green) allows you to set up a bitcoin wallet with just a few taps. Following the standard setup flow, you will create a mobile wallet with private keys stored on your mobile device. This is ideal for beginners with smaller amounts of bitcoin and for those looking for easy, convenient spending.

## Set up a new wallet

1\. Open the Blockstream app and select **Get Started** to create a new mobile (software) wallet.

> **Note:** If you have a [Jade hardware device](https://store.blockstream.com/collections/physical-storage), choose **Connect Jade** instead to get set up.

2\. Tap **Setup Mobile Wallet** to create a new Bitcoin wallet. By default, the Blockstream app will secure your wallet with your device biometrics and prompt a biometrics scan at this time (i.e. FaceID). If biometrics are not enabled or the app does not have permission, you can set up a PIN instead.

> **Tip:** If you'd like to use a recovery phrase that you've already generated from another wallet, select **Restore from backup**.

3\. The Blockstream app will then generate your private keys. Tap **Continue** to proceed.

4\. Your wallet is now ready for use! You can begin purchasing, receiving, and sending bitcoin.

> **Warning:** At this point, the keys to your bitcoin wallet are only stored on this device. **If you lose or break this phone, there is no way to access your funds unless you have** [**backed up your recovery phrase**](https://helpcenter.dxp-frontend.devserver.app/blockstream-app/set-up-transact-recover-your-wallet/back-up-wallet)**.**
